A journey that took him to hell 。 。 。

Having survived combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and been decorated with medals, Travis Devine mysteriously leaves the Army under a cloud of suspicion。 And at thirty-two years old, he’s swapping fighting the Taliban and Al Qaeda for a different kind of danger in the cut-throat world of high finance。

His daily commute on the 6。20 a。m。 train into New York’s financial district, to his new job as an analyst at the minted powerhouse investment bank Cowl and Comely, takes him into a world where greed, power, jealousy and ambition result in the financial abuse of the masses and the enrichment of an elite few。 But it is on this daily journey that he passes a house where he sees something that sounds alarm signals he cannot ignore。

A close friend of Devine’s, Sarah Ewes, is the first victim and the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death at Cowl and Comely compel him to investigate further。 As he digs deeper, he discovers strange coincidences and unnerving truths。 As the deaths pile up, and the major players show their hands, he must question who he can trust and who he must fight。

It's no secret that I love David Baldacci's novels - particularly his more recent work including the Amos Decker, Atlee Pine and Aloysius Archer series。 I notice his latest book, The 6:20 Man is listed a standalone on the inside cover of the book, but wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a series and the door is certainly open for it to do so。And given that I zoomed through it (unplanned) in an evening, having an almost-midnight bedtime on a 'school' night, I expect other readers will (also) have It's no secret that I love David Baldacci's novels - particularly his more recent work including the Amos Decker, Atlee Pine and Aloysius Archer series。 I notice his latest book, The 6:20 Man is listed a standalone on the inside cover of the book, but wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a series and the door is certainly open for it to do so。And given that I zoomed through it (unplanned) in an evening, having an almost-midnight bedtime on a 'school' night, I expect other readers will (also) have the appetite for more。。。 given the likeable lead we're proffered via Travis Devine。There are a few coincidences here which felt a smidge OTT, but that aside I blazed through this book, going way past the time I'd planned to put it down and sleep。 It's an addictive read, thanks predominantly to the characters。There are a few twists thrown in at the end。 Some I didn't see coming and some a smidge sad。 But this is certainly action-packed - from the moment we meet Devine to the closing chapter, it doesn't stop and Baldacci sustains that pace well。 Indeed I kept turning page after page, eager to know who did what and what agendas they were hiding。Read my review here: https://www。debbish。com/books-literat。。。 。。。more

David Baldacci’s “The 6:20 Man” is not a very good novel。 Rambling, repetitive, not well-researched, non-specific, and all too ready to condemn Wall Street and the culture of American business, it features a main character of confusing actions and motivations whom I found to be neither compelling nor sympathetic。Travis Devine is a West Point graduate and a former U。S。 Army captain and elite Ranger who has separated himself from the service for some mysterious reason。 Now, having gotten his MBA, David Baldacci’s “The 6:20 Man” is not a very good novel。 Rambling, repetitive, not well-researched, non-specific, and all too ready to condemn Wall Street and the culture of American business, it features a main character of confusing actions and motivations whom I found to be neither compelling nor sympathetic。Travis Devine is a West Point graduate and a former U。S。 Army captain and elite Ranger who has separated himself from the service for some mysterious reason。 Now, having gotten his MBA, he works as a bottom-of-the-ladder intern/analyst for a fictional premier Wall Street firm。 He hates his job and he hates Wall Street but he will keep at it because it is the penance he feels he must perform to atone for his mysterious sin。A co-worker—a woman he slept with once—is found hanged in one of the firm’s offices。 On that same day, a retired general who now heads an “Office of Special Projects” inside the Department of Homeland Security, shanghais Devine and blackmails him into spying on the firm in order to discover the seriously “not right thing” that’s going on there。 The general has no idea what that thing might be。 He just has his suspicions。 It’s up to Devine to figure it out。 Otherwise, he’ll find himself in prison。It’s tough to engage with a main character who has a tremendous chip on his shoulder。 Devine thinks of himself as the “poster boy” for “everyone having dark, unspoken sides of which no one else, not even close friends and family, was aware。” His motives and actions are often contradictory and sometimes seemed, at least to me, foolish or weak。 While, like Jack Reacher, he’s physically imposing and very able to take care of himself, he doesn’t seem to have much strength of character。The story itself is hindered by a systemic lack of specificity, not to mention shallowness。 For example, while we know that Devine’s employer, Cowl and Comely (C&C) is a Wall Street “white-glove” firm (the correct term for describing an elite firm is “white-shoe”), we’re never really clued in as to what it does。 Is it a brokerage? A mergers and acquisitions shop? A private equity manager? Nor do we learn about the work of any of its employees。 All we’re ever really allowed to know is that Devine sits at a desk with two computer screens and crunches numbers and writes reports which are flung back at him by cut-throat corporate co-workers while C&C’s head throws parties and drives a Bugatti between his palatial estate north of the city and his apartment on the top floor of the firm’s building。As for the writing, it’s pretty mediocre。 The prose is sometimes awkward。 There are technical descriptions that are long and almost incomprehensible。 The dialogue often meanders and relies heavily on cliché。 And there’s no subtlety or real cleverness to the novel。 Mr。 Baldacci makes his points about American business and capitalism, not with a rapier, but with a battering ram。 Bottom line: I found this to be not a pleasure to read and not entertaining。 After 150 pages, I finally gave up。 。。。more

3。5 stars - rounded upIt's been a long time since I've read a David Baldacci book, and I'm kind of wondering why I've waited so long to pick another one of his books up。 I always loved his ability to take real people and entwine them into a suspenseful and thrilling storyline。 Travis is a complex character with a lot of emotional baggage weighing him down, yet he manages to be sympathetic and likable - a great character for future books, if Baldacci is interested in developing him further。 This 3。5 stars - rounded upIt's been a long time since I've read a David Baldacci book, and I'm kind of wondering why I've waited so long to pick another one of his books up。 I always loved his ability to take real people and entwine them into a suspenseful and thrilling storyline。 Travis is a complex character with a lot of emotional baggage weighing him down, yet he manages to be sympathetic and likable - a great character for future books, if Baldacci is interested in developing him further。 This book has a secondary cast of hodge-podge characters that are (mostly) all likeable and intriguing。 It's a suspenseful story without being too over the top, with enough twists and turns to grab your interest and keep you guessing, but not so complicated it can't be followed。 If this is your first Baldacci book, it's a great introduction to his writing。 And if you're already a fan, I don't think you'll be disappointed! Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

He got up very early every morning and was at the local high school working out by four before going to work。 He was in prime physical shape and had been well-trained as an army ranger, which came in handy several times。 He had three roommates, all of whom he liked and thought they were there by happenstance。 He was to learn later that might not be the case。 It was a complicated and compelling plot, typical of Baldacci。 I enjoyed it and really had no idea of the outcome before it happened。 I like that in a book。 There is so much more to the book than I can cover here。 I recommend you read or listen to it。The readers were Zachary Webber, Christine Lakin, and Mela Lee。 I thought Webber was terrific but I felt like the women readers made caricatures of most of the women。 It was thoughtfully read other than that and I enjoyed it。 I found it a compelling listen。I was invited to read a free audio version of The 6:20 Man by Hachette Audio, through Netgalley。 All thoughts and opinions are mine。 #netgalley #hachetteaudio #davidbaldacci #the620man 。。。more

David Baldacci - always a winner in my opinion - whats not to like。 Just get comfortable and enjoy every written word。 New character in the shape of Travis Devine, an ex Army Ranger who left under a cloud, is the 6。20 man。 He boards the 6。20 train into the city every day in his new role as an entry level financial analyst at a prestigious investment firm。 Financial thriller, murder mysteries with twisting and turning investigations, conspiracy and a detailed look into the international world of David Baldacci - always a winner in my opinion - whats not to like。 Just get comfortable and enjoy every written word。 New character in the shape of Travis Devine, an ex Army Ranger who left under a cloud, is the 6。20 man。 He boards the 6。20 train into the city every day in his new role as an entry level financial analyst at a prestigious investment firm。 Financial thriller, murder mysteries with twisting and turning investigations, conspiracy and a detailed look into the international world of finance。 A mixture of interesting supporting characters evolve throughout the book and make this a great book。 Hopefully a new series。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

With the police convinced of his guilt and having no other option, Devine begins investigating alone until he finds himself in the employ of a government agent whose office of choice is the back room of an Italian restaurant! As he tries to unravel the clues he's found the body count increases and danger strikes too close for comfort。 Suddenly discovering the truth becomes secondary to staying alive, but, truth be told, Travis isn't sure he'll succeed at either! This is, at present, a standalone from the ever popular David Baldacci。 It delves into areas I have no experience of but it was never too complicated or simplistic。 Instead as clues and information came to light the explanations made it easier to just keep reading。Travis Devine is a mysterious main protagonist, intentionally so, and I really enjoyed his part in this book。 His colleagues were even more guarded but if he comes back in future works that may be rectified。 The storyline has all the twists and turns you would expect from a master of his craft and there was no padding or unnecessary words, this was action all the way and I thoroughly enjoyed it。 I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own。 This is excellent and highly recommended。 。。。more
